Voluntary Student Health
The MSU student health insurance plan (SHIP) offers health coverage for students and their eligible dependents through Aetna. If you are a student who does not fall into an auto-enrolled group (medical, international, or graduate assistant), you are eligible to voluntarily enroll in the SHIP plan. Through the health plan, you have access to quality health care through hospitals, physicians and affiliated health care professionals in the Aetna provider network. Locate a provider through the Aetna website.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
After graduating from MSU, you are no longer required to maintain health insurance coverage. However, due to the high cost of medical care in the United States, going without insurance is extremely risky. The Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) strongly recommends that you secure health insurance coverage for the entire duration of your OPT period. For more information, please go to https://oiss.isp.msu.edu/health-wellness-and-safety/us-health-care-insurance/.
If you were a student at MSU prior to your OPT enrollment, please contact the Solutions Center at SolutionsCenter@hr.msu.edu to request an update to your student demographic in the Academic HealthPlans (AHP) system to an OPT student so that you may voluntarily purchase the plan.
If you are completing OPT at MSU but were not an MSU student, you will create your own account in the AHP system to voluntarily purchase OPT health coverage.
