Student and Graduate Assistant (GA) Dental

Michigan State University (MSU) offers student and GA dental insurance through Delta Dental of Michigan. The dental insurance plan is a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan that offers you an affordable, quality dental plan.

Coverage and Enrollment Dates:

2025-2026 Plan Year

Fall 2025
Open Enrollment: July 1, 2025 through October 31, 2025
Coverage Effective: September 1, 2025 through August 31, 2026

2024-2025 Plan Year

Spring 2025
Open Enrollment: November 1, 2024 through February 28, 2025
Coverage Effective: January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2025

Enrollment Process and Eligibility for Students and GAs

Eligibility for Students

  • International students
  • Medical students
  • Veterinary students
  • MSU College of Law students (who are actively attending classes on campus)
  • Undergraduate and graduate students who are in a degree program or completing certification
  • Fellowship students
  • Lifelong Education students (taking one or more credits)
  • English Language Program students

Eligible Dependents

Eligible dependents of students enrolled in the plan:

  • Spouse/Other Eligible Individual (OEI)
  • Children
  • Stepchildren

Note:  Dependent children must be under age 26.

Qualifying Life Event changes are not available for the Student Delta Dental Plan.

Eligibility for Graduate Assistants

  • Graduate assistants with 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4 appointments (eligible for tuition waiver)
  • Michigan State University pays 50% of the dental plan premiums for eligible MSU Graduate Assistants with active appointments. 

Please note there is a difference between being a graduate  student  and a graduate  assistant.  If you are a graduate student without a paid appointment as a graduate assistant, you do not qualify for the Graduate Assistant Dental Plan, but can enroll in the student dental plan.

Qualifying Life Event changes are not available for the Graduate Assistant Delta Dental Plan.

To find a Delta Dental PPO participating dentist near you, call their customer service department toll-free at 1-800-971-4108. Delta Dental’s Automated Service Inquiry system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can provide you with the names of participating dentists. You also can access their online provider directories at www.deltadentalmi.com.

If your current dentist does not participate in Delta Dental PPO, you can recommend them for membership by completing an online referral form. You also may call Delta Dental's customer service department at 1-800-971-4108 to refer your dentist. Please note: it is each dentist’s decision whether or not to join, and each dentist accepted by Delta Dental must first meet the qualifying criteria established for each program.

As required under the Affordable Care Act, pediatric dental check-up and vision eye exam services are essential health benefits. Both the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan and the Aetna GA Health Insurance Plan provide coverage for these services for children up through age 19.
