FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

MSU benefits-eligible employees have the option to enroll in various voluntary benefits. Please get in touch with the benefit administrator, MSU Benefits Plus, with questions at 888-758-7575.

Regular active full-time and part-time (50.0%-89.9%) employees with a continued appointment of nine months or more, and their eligible dependents.

Eligible dependents for voluntary benefits vary by the type of benefit.

  • Legal Spouse: Eligible for all voluntary benefits.
  • Other Eligible Individual (OEI): Eligible for all voluntary benefits except for Critical Illness insurance.
  • Dependent Child(ren): Eligible through the end of the calendar year during which the child turns age 23.

You may only cancel accident, critical illness, legal, and vision insurance during the annual Open Enrollment period in October or if you experience a qualifying life event (e.g., marriage, divorce, death, birth/adoption, or change in employment).

Auto, home, and pet insurance may be cancelled at any time.

  1. Visit ebs.msu.edu and log in using your MSU NetID and password.
  2. Complete multi-factor authentication. If you have not yet registered for multi-factor authentication, visit the MSU Secure IT website.
  3. Click the My Benefits top navigation tab.
  4. Select the MSU Benefits Plus tile (opens in a new window). 
    1. Already Registered Members: If you're already registered with MSU Benefits Plus, the first time you log in after July 23, 2025, you will be prompted to create an account. Review the details on the screen and click Create Account to access voluntary benefits. 
    2. New Members: You will be prompted to create an account. Review the details on the screen and click Create Account to access voluntary benefits. 
  5. You may now review the available voluntary benefit options, including monthly plan premiums, and elect to enroll in, change, or cancel voluntary benefits through the MSU Benefits Plus website.
  6. If you enroll in, change, or cancel any voluntary benefits, you will receive an email confirmation statement directly from the administrator, MSU Benefits Plus (not MSU).

If you are enrolling as a result of a qualifying life event (e.g. marriage, divorce, death, birth/adoption, or change in employment), please contact MSU Benefits Plus Customer Care at 888-758-7575.

You may only enroll in, change, or cancel accident, critical illness, legal, and vision insurance during the annual Open Enrollment period in October or if you experience a qualifying life event (e.g., marriage, divorce, death, birth/adoption, or change in employment). In those instances, you will have 30 days from the qualifying event or new hire/appointment to enroll.

You may enroll in auto, home, and pet insurance at any time.

Your enrollment in voluntary benefits will continue (no need to re-enroll during Open Enrollment) unless you cancel.

Voluntary benefits are paid via payroll deductions every month (1st paycheck for bi-weekly paid employees).

Accident, Critical Illness, Legal, and Vision Insurance: If you enroll during Open Enrollment in October, the effective date would be January 1 of the following year.

New employees or employees with a qualifying life event (QLE) may enroll within 30 days of their hire date or QLE.  Their coverage would be effective as follows:

  • If you enroll between the 1st and 15th of the month, your coverage will be effective the first of the month following the date of enrollment (i.e., if enrollment occurs January 1 to 15, coverage is effective February 1).
  • If you enroll between the 16th and the last day of the month, your coverage will be effective the first of the month after the month following enrollment (i.e., if enrollment occurs January 16 to 31, coverage is effective March 1).

Auto, Home, and Pet Insurance: Varies by enrollment date.

You may only enroll in, change, or cancel accident, critical illness, legal, and vision insurance during the annual Open Enrollment period in October or if you experience a qualifying life event (e.g., marriage, divorce, death, birth/adoption, or change in employment).

You can make changes to auto, home, and pet insurance anytime.

Dependent children are eligible through the end of the calendar year the child turns age 23, with no restrictions such as student enrollment or IRS dependency.

It is your responsibility to cancel coverage when dependent children no longer qualify to stop premium deductions.

Auto Insurance: Family members who are resident relatives in the same household are covered with no age limitations.

If the Leave of Absence is unpaid, employees will be directly billed for all voluntary benefits.

If the Leave of Absence is paid, premiums will continue to be deducted from the employee's paycheck monthly.

Employees will be directly billed for all voluntary benefits in the event of a layoff.

Employees will be sent a direct bill option after they are terminated/separated from the university, so that they may continue their coverage. However, if they elect not to continue their coverage, their coverage will terminate as follows:

Vision Insurance: The end of the month of termination/separation.

Auto/Home, Critical Illness, Legal, Long-Term Care, and Pet Insurance: The last calendar day of the month for which the employee has paid a full month's worth of premium.
