Voluntary Benefits FAQs

Benefits-eligible msu employees have the option to enroll in various voluntary benefits. Enroll in these voluntary benefits by visiting the MSU Benefits Plus website

Regular active full-time and part-time (50-89.9%) support staff, faculty and academic staff with a continued appointment of nine months or more and their eligible dependents.

Cancellation of vision, legal, or critical illness insurance is only allowed during the annual Open Enrollment period in October or as the result of a qualifying life event (e.g., marriage, divorce, death, birth/adoption, or change in employment). Auto and/or home or pet insurance may be cancelled at any time through the MSU Benefits Plus website.

You may enroll for voluntary benefits through the MSU Benefits Plus website. If you are enrolling as a result of a qualifying life event (e.g. marriage, divorce, death, birth/adoptions, or change in employment), contact MSU Benefits Plus customer Care at 888-758-7575.

Enrollment of vision, legal, or critical illness insurance is only allowed during the annual Open Enrollment period in October unless you are newly hired or appointed or have a qualifying life event (e.g., marriage, divorce, death, birth/adoption, or change in employment). In those instances you will have 30 days from the event or new hire/appointment to enroll. You may enroll in auto and/or home or pet insurance at any time. Your enrollment will continue (no need to re-enroll during open enrollment) unless you cancel.

Payroll deductions will be taken monthly (1st paycheck for biweekly paid employees) for all voluntary benefits.

 

Vision, Legal, Critical Illness and Pet Insurance:
If you enroll during Open Enrollment in October, the effective date would be January 1st of the following year.

If you are enrolling because of being newly hired or appointed, or have a qualifying life event, your coverage would be effective as follows:

  • 1st of the following month if you enroll between the 1st-15th of the month.
  • 1st of the second month following enrollment if enrollment is between the 16th-end of the month.

(i.e. enrollment on 10/3/2020 would be effective 11/1/2020 and enrollment on 10/27/2020 would be effective 12/1/2020).

Auto and/or Home Insurance:
Varies by enrollment date.

You can make changes to auto and/or home and pet insurance at any time.

 

Vision Insurance:
Covered to end of the year that they turn age 23 regardless of student status

Legal Insurance:
Children covered from birth to age 19. From age 19 to age 23, if a full-time student or lives in the employee's household and are claimed as an IRS dependent by the employee. Dependents are eligible until end of year they reach stated age.

Auto Insurance:
Family members who are resident relatives in the same household are covered with no age limitations.

Critical Illness Insurance:
Children covered from birth to age 19. From age 19 to age 23, if a full-time student or lives in the employee's household and are claimed as an IRS dependent by the employee. Dependents are eligible until end of year they reach stated age.

 

If leave is unpaid, employees will be directly billed for all voluntary benefits. If leave is paid, premiums will continue to be deducted from their paychecks.

 Employees will be directly billed for all voluntary benefits upon layoff.
