Spartan excellence learning series

The Spartan Excellence: Lean Learning Series  is a core component of MSU’s Operational Excellence initiative. It equips learners with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to improve processes, strengthen accountability, and build a culture of continuous improvement. Grounded in the principles of Operational Excellence, the program emphasizes aligning improvements with MSU’s mission, values, and the 2030 Strategic Plan.

Through a sequence of skill-building modules, participants will learn how to define problems, analyze processes, design improvements, and implement sustainable solutions. By integrating Lean methods within the broader Operational Excellence framework, the series helps create lasting practices that enhance efficiency, transparency, and the overall Spartan Experience.

Spartan Excellence (operational excellence) is an EVPA initiative but this learning series is open to all employees at MSU. Use these links to learn more about Spartan Excellence and Operational Excellence.

Participants will:

    • Understand and apply foundations of Operational Excellence and Lean thinking in higher education, including principles, culture, and alignment with MSU’s strategic priorities.
    • Use structured problem-solving methods (A3 Thinking, root cause analysis, 5 Whys) to define and communicate improvement opportunities.
    • Analyze current processes and plan future improvements using mapping, waste identification, data, and stakeholder input.
    • Develop and implement solutions with strategies for embedding change, building accountability, communicating results, and sustaining improvements over time.
    • Strengthen collaborative and cultural practices such as psychological safety, growth mindset, stakeholder engagement, and recognition of contributions.
