Product Assessment
Careers @ MSU and the applications for positions have been reviewed for color contrast, keyboard navigation, and use with screen readers. Here are notes about the assessed screen reader and browser combinations:
- If you use a screen reader, we recommend NVDA screen reader from NVaccess.org, using the Firefox ESR browser from Mozilla.
- The following combinations were not assessed, but may work fine:
- NVDA with Chrome
- JAWS with Firefox ESR or Chrome

Tips for Getting Through Known Issues
There are a number of issues MSU and the vendor are addressing. Below are tips to help you through the system.
List of Jobs: Table of Jobs
The list of jobs is structured in a table. Each opening has two rows of the table. The first row spans all columns and contains the position name, which is a link to more details. The cells of the second row contain some basic information about the posting.
Logging In
When creating your password, there is a field indicating password strength. Switch to Browse Mode and down arrow to read the Strength of the chosen password.
Applying to Positions: New Window or Tab
The “Apply Now” button will open the application in a new tab or window. As you progress through the application, remember that tab or window is still open for reference.
Applying to Positions: Document Uploads
Uploading a document causes the screen to refresh, and returns the focus to the top of the page. Failing to answer a question or answering one incorrectly also causes the screen to refresh and the focus to return to the top; error messages are presented.
Documents can also be uploaded from Google Docs. The navigation of that pop-up box can be challenging but is beyond the ability of MSU or our vendor to address.
Using Dropdowns/Combo Boxes
When using JAWS, Combo Boxes will read as editable fields. JAWS, by default, uses a virtual PC cursor, which causes the screen reader to jump out of forms mode, which is not desirable when completing a form. Turning off the virtual cursor using the Insert and Z key at the same time allows the arrows keys to navigate the field so you can make a selection.
Application Submitted
After submitting the application, the system takes you to your personal Home page. It will automatically go to any incomplete applications, jumping past header information. If you don’t have any incomplete applications, the focus goes to your first completed application.
