Impact of Termination/Separation on Benefits
In case of termination/separation, benefits will be affected as follows:
Health, Dental, Employee-Paid Life* and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D)
Coverage will terminate at the end of the month of active employment.
Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Funds
Claims for eligible expenses incurred through the end of the month, in which employment ends, can be submitted for reimbursement. Claims must be submitted by April 30th of the year following employment termination/separation. The FSA card will be deactivated upon termination/separation.
Health Savings Account (HSA) Funds (including any contributions from the university)
Can continue to be used for eligible medical expenses after employment ends.
Long-Term Disability (LTD), Expanded Life* and Travel Accident Coverage
Cease on the last day of active employment.
Voluntary Benefits
Employees will be sent a direct bill option, after they are terminated/separated from the university, so that they may continue their coverage. However, if they elect not to continue their coverage, their coverage will terminate as follows:
- Vision Insurance - The end of the month of termination/separation.
- Auto/Home, Critical Illness, Legal, Long-Term Care, and Pet Insurance - The last calendar day of the month for which the employee has paid a full month's worth of premium.
*Employee-Paid Life and Expanded Life Coverage may be converted by contacting the insurance company directly.
Please Note:
Coverage under the health and/or dental plans may be continued in accordance with the Consolidated Omnibus Reconciliation Act (COBRA) of 1986, for up to 18 months (29 months if currently disabled and receiving Social Security Disability (SSD) or deemed disabled by SSD any time during the first 60 days of COBRA coverage) by paying a monthly premium.
