On Monday, December 13, 2021, an announcement was made by President Stanley that the university is providing employees with a recognition bonus. This one-time recognition bonus is being paid from MSU reserves. Although we still face challenges to our recurring base budget, we wanted to offer our deepest gratitude for all you have been doing every single day to advance MSU’s vital mission. 

Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions regarding the bonus.

This one-time recognition bonus is being paid from MSU reserves. We can take these actions because our short-term situation has further stabilized, making us confident we can utilize one-time reserves to fund this well-deserved bonus. Although we still face challenges to our recurring base budget, we wanted to offer our deepest gratitude for all you have been doing every single day to advance MSU’s vital mission. 

The following members of our MSU community – hired on or before September 1, 2021 who continue to be employed on January 1, 2022 – qualify for the $1500 bonus: faculty and academic staff (including research associates and academic specialists), regular and temporary support staff employees, as well as graduate assistants (teaching and research).

Employees are only eligible if, as of January 1, 2022, they have complied with University COVID-19 protocols as follows:

  • Have completed the vaccine attestation form and are fully vaccinated
  • Have begun a program of vaccination
  • Have a pending or approved exemption request
  • AND are registered for the Early Detection Program (EDP), if required to participate
    • Those who are fully vaccinated are not required to participate in EDP

The bonus will be paid on the regularly scheduled biweekly and monthly payroll cycles in January 2022. For biweekly employees, the lump sum bonus will be paid on January 28, 2022. For monthly employees, the bonus will be paid on January 31, 2022. 

Yes. Like all compensation, applicable supplemental income withholding will apply. 

No. The bonus is not subject to university or employee retirement contribution. 

Yes. This bonus will apply to all regular and part-time employees and temporary employees who were employed on September 1, 2021, and are still employed on January 1, 2022. 

Yes. Temporary and part-time employees will receive the full $1,500 bonus (subject to tax withholding). 

No. On-call employees are not eligible for the bonus. 

Yes. As long as the employee meets the eligibility requirements on both September 1, 2021 and January 1, 2022, they are eligible for the bonus. 

Employees on leave will be included, except for the following: As of 09/01/2021 and 01/01/2022, those on a leave to retirement or those who are on permanent long term disability, who have exhausted their LTD leave period; or those on an inactive layoff status as of 01/01/2022.

Yes. All faculty and academic staff, regarless of union status, will receive the bonus. 

No. You must be actively employed on January 1, 2022, to be eligible for the bonus. 

No. We cannot take individualized listings from units to exclude people from the bonus.  If the employee meets the eligibility criteria, they will receive the bonus.
