CIGNA Global Plan

MSU is pleased to offer the Cigna Global Plan for eligible individuals living abroad. Cigna offers the opportunity for you to create a plan to suit your needs as well as your budget. MSU is making this new plan option available as a result of the recent transition for retiree health care and prescription drug coverage to Humana from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM). Learn more about the new Humana plans here.

As a result of this change, MSU no longer offers BCBSM for Medicare-eligible individuals. Coverage under the Humana plans are for those retirees and their eligible dependents who reside in the United States. If you are an MSU retiree currently living abroad and you do not have an international health insurance plan, BCBSM will terminate on Dec. 31, 2020 and you will be responsible to select and pay for international coverage.

Eligibility for the Plan

This plan is only available to MSU Humana eligible individuals, Medicare or Non-Medicare eligible and their dependents. It is an option for those living abroad because effective January 1, 2021, BCBSM healthcare is no longer an option and Humana excludes coverage for individuals living outside the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Please note: Humana eligible individuals do have some coverage for worldwide travel, but there are some limitations and this is also an option if a person is seeking additional coverage while traveling.

About the Plan

This plan is one option that MSU is sharing for you to review when you are seeking international coverage. It is something you may or may not elect to purchase based on your research and you pay 100%.

Cigna offers you the option to choose a core inpatient plan for your international medical insurance at various levels and then allows you to add extra benefits to meet your needs.
