Academic Specialist Review Timetable 2025-26 for Reappointment, Award of Continuing Status and Promotion to Senior Academic Specialist

Note: Dates below reflect the university-level schedule. Colleges, departments, and schools may establish earlier internal deadlines.

On or Before Task
September 15, 2025

MSU Human Resources emails Deans, Separately Reporting Directors, and Academic Specialist Review Contacts with links to:

  • Timetable for Academic Specialist Review for Reappointment, Promotion, Continuing
  • Preliminary Materials for Academic Specialist Review in the Continuing Appointment System memo

October 1, 2025

Unit response to the preliminary report due to MSU HR Operations.

November 21, 2025

 

Office of the Provost distributes materials electronically to each unit for specialists scheduled for review in 2025–26.

The reports include:

  • Form A: Specialists in the Continuing System with probationary end date of August 15, 2027
  • Form B: Annual Review Certification for all specialists (continuing and fixed term)
  • Report: Fixed-Term Specialists with 60+ FTE service months (eligible for promotion to Sr. Academic Specialist)

November – April 30, 2026

 

Unit Review Process – Academic specialists should receive communication from unit administrator on the unit review process by November 30, 2025.

April 1, 2026

Deadline to Request Extension of Continuing Specialist Review. Requests must be submitted to fasaffairs@msu.edu.

April 24, 2026

 

Deans or separately reporting directors request primary unit administrator to inform individual academic specialist of whether the dean or unit leader has approved the department's recommended action and that the dean or unit leader has forwarded a completed " Form on Progress and Excellence with Recommendation for Reappointment, Award of Continuing or Promotion to Sr. Specialist Action" to the Provost. Even if the dean or unit leader does not approve the department's recommended action, all review materials in support of such an action will be made available for review by the provost and their staff. 

May 1, 2026

 

Deans or Separately Reporting Directors submit the following to MSU HR FAS Review Non-Tenure FASreviewNon-Tenure@hr.msu.edu 

Form A: Academic Specialist in the Continuing System Recommendation (include explanation of each form)

Form B:  Certification by Dean or Unit Leader with the dates of most recent review of each Specialist

Form on Progress and Excellence (formerly Form C): Completed form and supporting materials.

May – July 1, 2026 

Provost and the Vice Provost/Associate Vice President for Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs review submitted packets. Consultation may occur with deans or unit leaders as needed.

July 15, 2026

 

Provost notifies Deans and Separately Reporting Director of recommendations accepted for recommendation to the President and the Board of Trustees.

July 17 to August 1, 2026

 

Deans and Separately Reporting Director send notices of action by the Office of the Provost to Chairpersons, Directors, and Academic Specialists.

October 1, 2026


Salary adjustments for awards of Continuing Status and/or Promotion to Senior Academic Specialist take effect.

October 15, 2026

 

Approved extensions and supporting materials for Provost-level review due to MSU HR FAS Review Non-Tenure FASreviewNon-Tenure@hr.msu.edu. Outcomes will take effect January 1, 2027.

December 15, 2026

 

Deadline for notification to academic specialist in the continuing system who are not reappointed.
