Office of the Provost distributes materials electronically. Reports are distributed to each unit of specialist that are required for Reappointment, Award of Continuing and Promotion to Sr. Specialist. The reports include: Form A: Academic Specialist in the Continuing System: academic specialists in the continuing appointment system that are appointed in your college or administrative unit with a probationary appointment end date of August 15, 2025 Form B: Documentation of Academic Specialist Annual Performance Reviews: This is a list of all academic specialists appointed in your college or administrative unit (both continuing system and fixed term) that should have an annual review, in accordance with the policies contained within the Academic Specialist Handbook Report: Fixed Term Specialist with Sixty (60) or more FTE Service Months: Academic Specialists with fixed term appointments who have completed 60 FTE service months are eligible for promotion to senior academic specialist. The criteria for consideration of promotion to the senior rank are subject to the same standards as academic staff in the continuing system. |

Unit Review Process – Academic specialists should receive communication from unit administrator on the unit review process by November 30. |
April 1, 2024 |
Final day to request an extension of continuing specialist review: Requests must be made and approved through the Office for Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs (fasaffairs@msu.edu). FASA will respond to the extension request and notify HR. |

Deans or separately reporting directors request chairpersons and school directors to inform individual academic specialist of whether the dean or unit leader has approved the department's recommended action and that the dean or unit leader has forwarded a completed " Form on Progress and Excellence with Recommendation for Reappointment, Award of Continuing or Promotion to Sr. Specialist Action" to the Provost. Even if the dean or unit leader does not approve the department's recommended action, all review materials in support of such an action will be made available for review by the provost and their staff. |

The following information is sent from the Dean or Separately Reporting Director through email to MSU HR FAS Review Non-Tenure (FASreviewNon-Tenure@hr.msu.edu): Form A: Academic Specialist in the Continuing System Recommendation (include explanation of each form) Form B: Certification by Dean or Unit Leader with the dates of most recent review of each Specialist Form on Progress and Excellence (formerly Form C): Completed form and supporting materials. |
June 3, 2024 – July 1, 2024 |
Provost and the Associate Provost/Associate Vice President for Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs, review Specialist packets. Associate Provost/Associate Vice President for Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs may consult with Dean or Separately Reporting Director on cases that may require further discussion. |
July 15, 2024

Provost notifies Deans and Separately Reporting Director of recommendations accepted for recommendation to the President and the Board of Trustees. |
July 17 to August 1, 2024
|
Deans and Separately Reporting Director send notices of action by the Office of the Provost to Chairpersons, Directors, and Academic Specialists. |
October 1, 2024 |
Award of Continuing and/or Promotion to Sr. Specialist salary increases are in effect. |
October 15, 2024
|
Approved extensions are due: Completed form and supporting materials for provost level review submitted to through email to MSU HR FAS Review Non-Tenure (FASreviewNon-Tenure@hr.msu.edu). Outcomes will be effective on January 1 of the following year. |
