I-9 QUICK TIP GUIDE
Deadlines and Fines
Section 1 of the I-9 must be completed by the employee by the original date of hire.
Section 2 of the I-9 must be completed by the verifier, with the employee present (photocopies are NOT allowed), no later than three days past the date of hire.
Fines associated with I-9s are doubling to a minimum of $252 per late I-9 or per error occurrence, and to a maximum of $2507 per late I-9 or per error occurrence.
Timeline

Employee accepts offer for employment.

Employee completes Section 1 of the I-9 no later than the date of hire.
Department must provide:

Employee brings documents to verifier to complete Section 2.

Employer completes Section 2 of the I-9 no later than three (3) days past the date of hire.

If the employee's work authorization expires, the verifier should complete Section 3.
Review Section 1
Prior to completing Section 2, choose View and Print or Email Employee Receipt to review Section 1 for the following:
- First and Last Name (in correct order)
- Social Security Number, Date of Birth and Work Status are correct based on the employee documents presented
- I-94 # and Alien Work Until Date is correct if applicable
MSU’s Remote Hire Process
For employees who are unable to come to campus to, the verifier must provide the employee with the date of the first day of employment and follow Remote Hire Instructions.
