Faculty & Academic Staff HIRING Modifications

On March 25, President Stanley communicated his directive to unit leaders for the University to observe some modifications to hiring, as a result of the coronavirus situation and its impact on the University. In his communication, President Stanley noted that “effective immediately and until further notice, all hiring decisions must be approved by the relevant vice president or provost, who will consult with the president as needed.” During this hiring modification period, please use the guidelines below as you move through the hiring process.

*This guidance applies to vacant positions. Reappointments are not subject to this provision; they may proceed without approval by an executive. Nevertheless, Academic Human Resources recommends that units assess the need for positions during this time of uncertainty. 

**For purposes of faculty and academic staff positions, additional approval requires the vice president's approval for which your unit reports. Vice Presidents include: 1) Executive VP for Academic Affairs and Acting Provost (T. Jeitschko), 2) Executive Vice President for Health Sciences (N. Beauchamp), and 3) Interim Vice President for Research and Innovation (D. Gage).

Processes

Dean approval is also required for academic colleges. In those cases where the Dean may be communicating directly via email with the Provost, the Hiring Approval Form must still be completed and attached for approval.

Most academic units, except the human health colleges, report to the Acting Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs (T. Jeitschko). In this instance, please send the completed form with the dean signature to Sarah Blanck, blancks@msu.edu.
