Support Staff

Overtime

The University is covered by the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The University is also covered by the Michigan Wage and Hour Act where applicable. Employees are considered either exempt or non-exempt from the FLSA's coverage with respect to minimum wage and overtime. Overtime is defined under the FLSA as hours worked in excess of 40 during a single workweek. Overtime must be paid at time-and-one-half. Collective Bargaining Agreements may contain overtime, compensatory time or other benefits in addition to the FLSA and should be consulted by supervisors. All University employees classified as non-exempt must accurately track and record their hours worked each day, as well as leave taken.

The Support Staff Overtime and Time Tracking Policy governs overtime at MSU and contains procedures for time tracking, as well as supervisor and employee expectations. Additionally, there is information regarding MSU’s application of the FLSA here .
