11.2 Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives - Affirmative Action Handbook
Michigan State University is committed to building a community that consistently:
- promotes equal opportunity for all;
- eliminates barriers based on considerations such as race, gender, age, national origin, sexual orientation, physical condition or religion;
- facilitates activities directed at achieving a nondiscriminatory and bias-free environment;
- recognizes the inherent value of each member of the MSU community.
The MSU Board of Trustees has designated the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives (353-3922) as the unit responsible for monitoring and coordinating the University's efforts in affirmative action and equal opportunity.
In working to improve human relations and equal opportunity throughout the university, the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives:
- facilitates access to all university programs and employment without regard for race, gender, age, national origin, sexual orientation, physical condition or religion;
- monitors and approves academic and support staff employment;
- participates in programming activities with the Vice Presidential areas (Provost, Finance and Operations, Student Affairs and Services);
- uses search committees as a means to educate and institutionalize the University's commitment to affirmative action in collaboration with the Vice Presidential areas;
- assesses patterns of discrimination in university units and initiates action to overcome problem areas;
- coordinates activities and provides leadership for boards and committees that serve in advisory capacities;
- maintains liaison with human relations and civil rights groups outside the university;
- serves on various committees within MSU as well as outside.
