Subject: Student Employee Critical Dates

MSU Human Resources would like to remind all units of upcoming critical dates for student employees working in your unit. If you have student employees who have not enrolled/registered for succeeding semesters of study, you will need to change them from their student employment positions to a temporary or on-call position to avoid being terminated after the grace period between semesters ends. To assist you in determining the most appropriate dates to use, and to help prevent conflicts in employment types, we recommend following these guidelines:

  • Spring-only 2020 students can remain in their student positions through 6/20/2020
  • Summer-only 2020 students can remain in their student positions through 9/26/2020
  • HR would recommend submitting any student-to-temp/on-call (TOC) position change requests using the day AFTER these dates as the effective date to ensure a smooth transition between employment groups for students with multiple assignments on campus (6/21/2020, and 9/27/2020 respectively)
  • For individuals going from non-student to student employment, we suggest using an effective date of the first day of the semester, which you can find on the Academic Calendar.
