Most positions can be advertised concurrently on-campus and off-campus. Based on CT, 1585, and 999 seniority provisions, it is logical to place advertisements after vacancies have been placed on-campus.
If a department decides to advertise a position off-campus it is strongly encouraged that they use Graystone Group Advertising for all advertising including The Lansing State Journal and The Chronicle of Higher Education. Graystone Group specializes in the design and placement of higher education recruitment advertising and will present Michigan State University in a consistent and professional manner while taking advantage of significant cost savings. To place an ad using Graystone’s services please use the following directions:
- Send ad copy, with a list of desired publication dates and names, to Graystone using one of the methods below.
- Display ads are graphically enhanced using a university relations approved ad template and are e-mailed or faxed back for changes and/or additions along with cost estimates. Unless otherwise indicated, display ads will not be released without approval.
- Line ads are place by Graystone directly with publications. Estimated costs are available prior to release.
Departments may create their own text, contact Human Resources/Staffing Services for assistance, or contact Graystone Group for assistance. Advertising text should always include:
- the minimum requirements of the position which closely parallel those stated in the internal posting
- the six-character posting number assigned for internal posting
- the phrase “For an application, visit our website at http://www.jobs.msu.edu or you may visit our office at 1407 S Harrison, Room 110, East Lansing, MI”
- the closing date for applications
- a statement at the end of the advertisement that says MSU is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer
Human Resources/Staffing Services and Graystone are also available to review text already written by a unit and direct units to appropriate newspapers/publications.
Occasionally, a department may wish to run a general advertisement. This type of advertisement will not include a specific position number or specific minimum requirements, but will reflect the general education, background and experience a department is seeking. A general reference title should be used, and also the phrase “For an application, visit our website at http://www.jobs.msu.edu or visit our offices at 1407 S Harrison, Room 110, East Lansing, MI,” and the statement MSU is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. This example may help you prepare an advertisement.
Departments will need to provide Human Resources/Staffing Services with the date the advertisement will be running so that the application materials are prepared and electronic communications are updated.
Departments will be responsible for paying for advertising and will be billed directly by Graystone. This direct billing will not change the current university discounts.
Departments may pay for these advertising services by using the University Procurement card if the charges are less than $1,000, or a Direct Payment Voucher.
